KOOPMANS, Dirk

September 16, 2014

Surrounded by his loving family, Dirk has gone to be with Jesus his Savior on September 16, 2014, after a long hard battle with Parkinson’s. He is now at rest. Dirk was born in Ternaard, The Netherlands, moved a year later to Weirum, where he loved to live. He immigrated to Canada with his family in 1954. He is lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Maaike, Drumheller, AB, daughter Alice (Peter), Aimee (Kelby), Lethbridge and Chris, Kyabram, Victoria, Australia, son Stephen (Gwen), Bobbie-Jo, Michael, Summerland, BC, son John (Darlene), Joanna (Tim) Chloe, Amanda and Kenny, daughter Barb (Bob), Ben (Chloe), Nick (Alanna) and Sarah, Airdrie, AB, son Greg (Jennifer) and Josh, Beaver Falls, BC, daughter Sylvia (James), Genis (Jared) Chanel, (Amaya) Lethbridge, AB, Teshia (Mason) Drumheller, AB and Justin, Coaldale, AB. Dirk’s first passion in life was his family, until his passion grew when his grand kids came along. He loved going on adventures in the hills or anything that allowed time with them, even with a mischievous grin saying, “Don’t tell Grandma!”. His second passion was flying. He purchased his very own Fleet Canuck in pieces, built and restored the plane to fly many years with it. To combine his 2 passions was almost heaven. Dirk was predeceased by his youngest son, Jimmy, his parents, his brothers William and Tom, and his granddaughter Carrie. Much gratitude and thankfulness goes out to Dr. Olfert, Hanna Continuing Care and Drumheller Continuing Care for their compassion and kindness. A funeral service was held September 20, 2014 at Grace Community Church officiated by Marvin Menssa in Drumheller, Alberta.

CALPASJOSEPH

CALPAS, Joseph James

September 9, 1935 - September 24, 2014

Joseph James Calpas passed away on Wednesday, September 24, 2014, in his sleep at his home in Brooks, at the age of 79 years. Joe was born on September 9, 1935 in Tilley, Alberta to George and Apolonia Calpas. He was the youngest of seven children, which benefitted him immensely in becoming a keen cribbage and checkers player. Joe grew up helping his family on the farm, and helped as he could to put food on the table by hunting and trapping on the side. He completed his grade school education in Tilley, and after graduation became interested in law enforcement and pursued a career with the RCMP. After his graduation from the RCMP he was stationed in Radville, Saskatchewan, where he met his bride to be, Joan Bouchard. They were married on November 12, 1960. Over the next decade, Joe worked for the Alberta Provincial Police in High Prairie and the City Police in Medicine Hat. During that time, they welcomed two sons, Jim and Dean. In 1969 the family moved to Drumheller where Joe worked for Corrections Canada. Shortly after, Joe and Joan had their third son, Kevin. Joe grew up to have a passion for sports and the outdoors. He grew up playing hockey in Tilley, and his love of hockey was shared with his sons and continued throughout his life. Joe grew up as a Detroit Red Wings fan, and as a Detroit Tigers fan for baseball, he would follow his teams as much as the radio reception of the time would allow. He was talented on both the accordion and harmonica. Joe loved his hunting dogs and was passionate about hunting, the ring-neck pheasant a particular favorite, and he spent as much time as he could every autumn in their pursuit. He had a keen eye for nature and was always on the watch for an interesting stone, pine cone, or photo to mark his travels. His enjoyment of the outdoors also included fishing and gardening. Joe never lost his interest in farming, and was appreciative of the time he could share with his family, especially at harvest. He was very interested in politics and current events in Canada, both listening and reading extensively on the subject. If you were around Joe, you were probably having to talk over the background of a radio! Joe was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Lukas and George and sisters Barbara Calpas and Anne Holm. He is survived by his wife Joan; sons Jim (Janet) Calpas, Dean (Elizabeth) Calpas and Kevin (Graciela) Calpas; sister Victoria Dovichak; brother John (Juli) Calpas, and many nieces and nephews. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, October 1 at 11:00 a.m. from St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Rev. Raul Hernandez Celebrant. Interment to follow at Brooks Cemetery. In memory of Joe, if friends desire, memorial tributes may be made to the charity of choice. Funeral arrangements in care of SMITH FUNERAL HOME, BROOKS, ALBERTA. Condolences may be forwarded through   www.sfh.ca   Telephone 403-362-4636 or Toll Free (866) 362-4652.

BARABASH, Walter

March 30, 1927 - July 25, 2014

Walter Barabash was a genuinely happy man; he rarely went a day in his long life without spending as much time as he could outdoors; and he never wore a shirt whenever possible. Unfortunately, since suffering a stroke in December 2010, Dad was trapped indoors with not much to be happy about and he was constantly clothed. It is with sadness that we, his children, announce that Walter is gone but also with acceptance as he lost his spirit and his ability to pace, fish, build, fix, drive, shovel, climb, and whistle on that sad day in December. He did not; however, lose his sense of humour or his ability to accept life as it came. Walter passed away peacefully on 25th July in Drumheller, AB. More importantly, he lived a good life for over 87 years. Walter married Doreen Lowry on 25 July, 1953 and they raised their family in Grande Prairie, AB. Dad packed up and moved to Drumheller in 1999, after Doreen passed away, and it was there that he met Josephine Smith in 2002. Left to remember Walter are his children and grandchildren: Mike and Gaye Barabash, Tom, Simon, & Roy (Grande Prairie); Delores McKone (Drumheller); Janice and Dennis Mayer, Allison, Doyle, Shalon, Daryl, & Dwayne (Cranbrook); and Rae Barabash and Philippe Lusson, Emilie, Dante and Mateo (Clyde); his companion Josephine Smith of Drumheller; his younger brother Joseph and Lorraine Barabash of Calgary; numerous inlaws, nieces and nephews. At Walter’s request there will be no funeral. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you make a donation to The War Amps in memory of Walter. You can read a full obituary about Walter by visiting the

ROVERE, Oliva

August 2, 1920 - August 6, 2014

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Mom, Nonna and Biz Nonna, Oliva (Olive) Rovere on August 6th, 2014 at the age of 94. Olive was born August 2nd, 1920 in Cusano, Italy to Virginia and Santo Sist.  In 1942, she married Giovanni (John) Rovere and together they had four children.  After the war they decided to move their family to Canada and in 1950 Olive and the first three of their children joined her husband in Midlandvale, Alberta.  In 1955, their fourth child was born, being the only true Canadian.  Olive and John became Canadian citizens five years later, believing it to be an honour and a privilege.  It was important to them to work hard to make a good life for their family.  Olive was well known for her wonderful meals, her talent as a seamstress and her green thumb.  After her husband’s passing, she found a love for fishing which led her to be known, far and wide, as the fisherwoman of the valley.  At the age of 65 she took on the challenge of learning to swim, helping the women to win “the battle of the sexes” at the local pool.  In 1987, Olive moved to the Manor where she lived for 22 happy, carefree years.  As her health slowly declined she moved to the Sunshine Lodge, Hillview and onto Continuing Care where her love of, and luck at bingo followed her. Olive will be sadly missed by her sister Olympia; her children Rita Balachandran, Renzo (Karen), Renata Oman, Richie (Cate); her grandchildren, Colette Oman, John Rovere (Bhari), Holly McDonald (Bob), Paula Rovere and Vincent Rovere (Anna); great grandchildren, Jacob, Joey, Erin, Jack, Katie, Jamie and Brendan. Viewing and Prayer Vigil will be held at Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes, Thursday, August 14, at 7:30 p.m. with Funeral Mass taking place on Friday, August 15, 2014 at 11:00 A.M. from St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church, luncheon to follow the interment service. If friends so desire memorial donations may be made to the charity of ones’ choice. Courtney-Winter’s Funeral Homes are in care of the arrangements.

CANNINGS, Mary Jean (nee Wood)

March 31, 1930 – August 11, 2014

Mary passed away peacefully at Agape Hospice in Calgary, Alberta, after a long fight against multiple myeloma. She is survived by her husband Edwin Cannings of Airdrie, daughter Sandy Duncan of Phoenix, Arizona, and son David (Linda) Cannings of Edmonton, Alberta. She is also survived by 5 grandchildren: Michael (Carrie) Duncan of Athabasca, Jodi (Ryan) Paulgaard of Airdrie, Donny (Krista) Duncan of Swift Current, SK, Jennifer (Ryan) Hoople of Edmonton, and Sherri Cannings of Edmonton. Mary was also blessed with 10 great grandchildren: Lucas, Jake, Hailey and Steele Duncan, Karley and Carson Paulgaard, Graison and Gage Duncan, and Addison and Avery Hoople. She will also be missed by her sister in law Joan Datchko of Houston, Texas, brothers in law Sidney (Dorothy) Cannings of Bowden and Raymond (Sylvia) Cannings of Carbon, as well as many nieces and nephews. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Bill and Isabella Wood (Elliot) and her older brothers, Albert Wood and John Wood and her husband, Donald Milton. Mary was one of the first married women to graduate the Calgary General Hospital nursing program in 1952, where she was her class valedictorian. She enjoyed a fulfilling nursing career throughout Alberta – after which she went back to school to the University of Alberta to get her bachelor degree in Nursing (Public Health) and she later went on to teach in that program. She then left that vocation to work with Ed building homes in the Edmonton area. Mary and Ed made the decision to retire at the age of 50 – they wintered in Phoenix and spent the rest of their time with friends and family at their home in Carbon, Alberta. Mary enjoyed golf, reading, travelling, her time in Phoenix and spending time with her friends and family. In 2000, Mary’s true passion came to fruition – the Wellness Centre was born. She lobbied the Alberta Government and local health regions to come up with the funding to provide wellness services to the Kneehill area: Carbon, Acme, Linden and Torrington. She led a dedicated group of volunteers and medical professionals to care for the rural people of this area – she identified the need for health services for Albertans living in rural areas, and worked to provide this service for them. Mary continued with this work until shortly before her passing, and she will be sorely missed by her Wellness Centre colleagues. A memorial service will be held at the Acme Community Hall on August 25, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s memory can be made to: Kneehill Area Wellness Centre, PO Box 2847, Three Hills, AB  T0M 2A0.

Jim was very proud of his service in the RCAF during World War II. He met and married Jennie Richardson in 1944 they were happily married for 48 years before her passing in 1992. The loss of his beloved Jennie was something Jim never truly recovered from. Jim was an entrepreneur all of his life. He owned many businesses over the years. His final business endeavour was the Delia UFA Bulk Agency which he owned from 1969 - 1981. Jim loved living in Delia. He was an active member os the community and enjoyed being involved in all events. Jim belonged to the Elks, Delia Curling Club, Delia Ag. Society, Delia Camber of Commerce and the Royal Canadian Legion, Delia Branch #61. Following his retirement in 1981 Jim and Jennie spent summers golfing and camping with dear friends Nick and Audrey Marshall. Winters were spent travelling to warm destinations, Hawaii being a favorite. Jim leaves to mourn his passing his daughter Lynn, her husband Ed and his two grandsons Ted and Ben, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. A farewell to Jim was held at the Delia Community Centre on August 18 at 2 p.m. Thank you to family and friends who helped us bid farewell to Jim with music, memories, laughter and good food. Thank you all so very much. If friends so desire memorial donations can be made in Jim’s name to the Delia Communities in Bloom, Memorial Wall Project c/o Delia Ag. Society or to the Alzheimer’s Society. Lynn and Ed would like to thank the wonderful staff at Hanna Long Term Care for the compassionate, loving care they gave Jim.

SCHARFL, Elda May (Hall)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our mother Elda May (Hall) Scharfl on August 25, 2014 at the age of 93. Mom was born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia to Annie and Richard Hall. On December 2, 1939 she married Alfred Scharfl. They had five children in Nova Scotia, then Mom left Nova Scotia to join Alfred in Alberta. She travelled by train with her one daughter and four sons to East Coulee, where Alfred was working in the coal mines. They then had five more girls and three boys, a total of thirteen children. Elda was predeceased by her husband of 50 years, Alfred (in July of 1990), her mother, father, two of her brothers, one sister, her granddaughter Tereasa “Terri" Scharfl in April of 2008, and her grandson Russell Scharfl in December of 2011. Elda will be greatly missed by her children Ralph Scharfl (Maggie) of Fort McMurray, Laraine Combs of Drayton Valley, Rudy Scharfl (Marie) of Calgary, Wilfred “Whip” Scharfl of Peachland (BC), Alfred Jr. Scharfl (Margie) of Drayton Valley, Vivian Deitz (Cliff) of East Coulee, Louise Diprose (Tom) of Drumheller, Lynda Heitrich of Etzikom, Carol Ross of Calgary, Louis Scharfl of Calgary, Ken (Ruth) Scharfl of Grande Prairie, Keith Scharfl of Calgary and Denise Hawranik of Oakville (ON).
