ANDERSEN, Jean Marie

April 3, 1950 - January 8, 2015

Jean Marie Andersen of Lethbridge, beloved daughter of Nora Andersen and the late John Andersen, passed away peacefully at Chinook Regional Hospital on January 8, 2015, at the age of 64 years. Jean was born in Drumheller, Alberta, on April 3, 1950. She lived with her family in the Danish community of Dalum, Alberta, until 1970, when she and her parents moved to Airdrie and then Calgary. In 2006, Jean and Nora moved to Lethbridge. Over the years, Jean enthusiastically attended numerous educational programs, developing close friendships with her mentors and teachers along the way. Mrs. Hands, her first teacher in Drumheller, was never forgotten. In Calgary, Jean attended classes at various locations where she took computer classes and did handicrafts. Her classes at Mount Royal College were the highlight of her education; she was very proud of the bursaries she earned there for her achievements. More recently, she spent many happy hours with Karen Charlton at DaCapo in Lethbridge, going to coffee, attending events in the city, making pickles or jam, and completing beautiful craft projects. She enjoyed photography, outings, picnics in the park, going to parties and out for coffee.  For many years, she was a dedicated Calgary Flames fan who also enjoyed movies and puzzles. Jean loved to travel. In addition to summer camping trips, she went on several cruises with her parents and loved stopping in at different ports of call. She travelled to Denmark as well as San Francisco, Jamaica, New York, Quebec, and Alaska. Jean loved spending time with family and it was within travelling and family where Jean found her fondest memories. Jean loved and was loved by many in her life – her mom and dad, her extended family and the many people who came to know her over the years through her participation in classes and the organizations of which she was a part. Her grandmother, Marie Jensen, was her inspiration. During the past four years, her L’Arche family became a very dear part of her life. All who knew Jean will remember her for her happy nature and her willing smile. Besides her loving mother, Nora, Jean is survived by her sister, Phyllis (Lynden) Hutchinson of Coaldale, brother, Raymond (Lynn Alden) Andersen of Vancouver, BC nieces, Karen (Keith) Gilchrist of St. Albert and Sarah Andersen of Vancouver nephew, Geoffrey (Sarah Charney) Hutchinson of Ft. Langley, BC Great-nephew, Quinn Gilchrist Great-nieces, Maya Gilchrist; Cecelia, Madeleine, and Johanna Hutchinson. On January 5, 2015, Mr. Donald Riggs of Edmonton, AB, formerly of Drumheller, AB, passed away at the age of 70 years. Donald is survived by his nieces, Cindy Van Eaton, Belinda and Michelle Garnett; nephews, Mark and Shawn Abramenko; great-niece, Candice Mah; great-nephew, Benjamin Speager and caregiver, Tracy, who was a very important part of Don’s life.  Predeceased by parents, Anne and Clifford Riggs and sisters, Linda and Darlene. KOCH, Doris Elaine

March 16, 1950 - January 11, 2015

Doris Elaine Koch of Drumheller, beloved wife of Allan Karl Koch, passed away suddenly on January 11, 2015 at the age of 64 years. Doris was born in Saskatoon, SK on March 16, 1950 to Arnold and Matilda Fuhr of rural Saskatoon. Doris attended school in Saskatoon and later, high school in Kelvington, SK. Doris and Allan married in 1967 and made a home together in Saskatoon. Doris was a wonderful mother to her three children: Tracy, Kelvin and Trina. Doris later continued her education and attended Red Deer College, obtaining her diploma as a Chiropractic Assistant. Doris and Allan later would spend several years as Foster parents at Prince Albert, SK. After returning to Alberta in 1989, Doris worked at Home Hardware in Didsbury. Doris’ last 15 years have been spent happily employed at The Drumheller Mail. Doris enjoyed spending her time with a good book and being with her children and grandchildren. Besides her loving husband Allan Koch, Doris is survived by; her daughter Trina (Mark) Hall, son Kelvin (Christie) Koch, as well as Grandma’s little princess Brianna, daughter of Trina and Mark, one sister Dianne (Cliff) Berscht, as well as many nieces and nephews. Doris was predeceased by her parents Arnold and Matilda Fuhr and her daughter Tracy Koch. On January 12, 2015, our much loved mother Marjorie Bergos passed away peacefully at the age of 92 years with her family by her side. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Lynne (Roland) of Edmonton, Barry (Christine) of Calgary and Joanne of Edmonton. Marjorie will also be fondly remembered by Margaret Clem of Kamloops, Jeanne Barr of Edmonton and Alex (Dorothy) Bergos of Drumheller as well as eight grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and extended family members and friends. She was predeceased by husband Peter, brother Jack and grandson Jeremy. Marjorie was born and raised in Vancouver and met Peter while he was stationed there during World War II. Married in October1946, they moved to Grainger, Alberta, then on to Bowden. After many happy years in Bowden, they retired to Olds. Marjorie always loved to garden for which she won many awards, participated in church activities, and was a 50 year member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Royal Canadian Legion. Marjorie lived in Edmonton for the last 5 years, close to her family. A Memorial Service was held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, January 17, 2015 at Highlands United Church at 11305 - 64 Street NW, Edmonton. STANKOVIC, Mary

May 5, 1917 - January 17, 2015

Mary Stankovic, of Hussar, passed away in Strathmore on January 17, 2015 after a brief illness at the age of 97. She was born May 5, 1917 in Gronlid, Saskatchewan. Coming from a family of 16 siblings she was fourth oldest. Mom moved to Saskatoon, Sakatchewan when she was six years old with her family. She lived there until she moved to Drumheller in 1940 where she met her husband John who was working in the coal mines. Then in 1946 she and John moved to Hussar when the opportunity to go farming arose. She started cooking for her husband and 10 men three meals a day, it was during this time she learned how to cook, bake bread and harvest a chicken or two for supper. While in Hussar she loved to play sports especially softball with the girls. In her golden years she looked forward to playing cards with the seniors at the Sundowners Centre in Hussar. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Blasken (Gerry) and her two grandsons Cody and Dillan  (Shelby), brother, Alex, sister-in-law, Bonnie, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, John, of 58 years, and by 14 of her brothers and sisters. A celebration of life will be held on Monday, January 26, 2015 at 1 pm at the Hussar Community Hall with lunch to follow. Service Arrangements are being done by Wheatland Funeral Home of Strathmore. MORTENSEN, Niels

Niels Mortensen of Drumheller, passed away on January 18, 2015 at the age of 90 years. Niels farmed all his life, he loved nature. He also loved to go for drives to view the country side. His continued interest in farming and how his neighbors were doing on their farms. Niels moved to Drumheller where he continued to enjoy life in his first house and later his condo until moving to the Sunshine Lodge. Niels was predeceased by; his parents Hans and Anna Mortensen, sisters: Rosa (Joe) Merkel, Viola (Chris) Peters, brother R. Tom (Helen) Mortensen and nephew Eagon Peters. Niels is survived by; 4 nieces Diane (Dennis) Crawford, Linda (Clifford) Christensen, Sandra (Joe) Sinclair, Corinne Drydale and a nephew Allen Mortensen. Carl W. DEEM, B.Sc.MT. (ASCP)(CLS)

March 11, 1940 - January 15, 2015

Husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend.  Carl was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia.  He loved music, chess, reading and food. He was on the honor roll at the University of Reno, Nevada and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology. His love of music took him from Atlantic to Pacific, from Hay River to New Orleans.  While relaxing at home he enjoyed playing classical music for guitar. Carl loved participating in the Alberta Senior’s Games in the snooker events and as an actor/musician in the Canadian Badlands Passion Play. The family asks that each one who knew Carl remember him in your own special way.

HERMAN, Donald Arthur

December 29, 1931 - January 19, 2015

Donald Arthur Herman, born December 29, 1931, died January 19, 2015 at the age of 83, after a brave but painful struggle with his family at his side.  He is survived by his wife Joan, children Deborah, Shelley, Douglas & Tracey, Kim & Tony, grandsons Matthew, Justin, Dale & Shaun, his brother Albert & Anne, niece Sharon & nephew Charles & Karen.  He is predeceased by his sister Evelyn Grace. Don grew up on a farm north of Michichi, learning his avid gardening skills and riding a horse to school.  Don then stayed at the dorm and attended Drumheller High School, later attending Tech (SAIT) and excelled in welding and mechanics. He worked with his parents and brother at the Michichi  farm for awhile, but when he tired of feeding cows in the winter he went to work on the rigs, in the Munson & Fish Lake areas. He then trucked for Ed Goette, hauling through rural Alberta. On May 8, 1956 he married Joan and started farming in the Over The Hill (Churchill) district until he retired and they moved to Drumheller in November 1996. In his early years at Churchill, Don worked winters at the Atlas Coal Mine running the diesel train engine that hauled the coal cars across the top to the tipple. Don was involved in the Over The Hill community association and drove school bus for 24 years, retiring in 1985, getting to know the neighbors as friends. Don was an avid skier from a young age, then teaching his kids and many others to ski. He first had a ski hill in his coulee, then he worked with the Drumheller Valley Ski Club and was involved with the hills at both Dunphy and the more recent hill in Drumheller. Don was on the board of the Heart to Heart Society. He also had season tickets to the Drumheller Dragons since their inception and enjoyed watching hockey in the valley since the days of the Drumheller Miners. Don was known for tinkering, fixing, and building from when he was young, and never finished until a job was done right. From the time he had a family, that was his greatest joy and concern. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Badlands Community Facility on Friday, January 23 at 2:00 p.m.  Donations may be made to the charity of your choice.

Maude Marshall passed away in her sleep at the Sunshine Lodge in Drumheller. She was predeceased by her parents Kingsley and Alice Morton, Husband Michael. Brothers Lloyd, Roy, Arthur (Lillian), Lawrence (Frances) and Charlie (Marg).  Grandsons Kory and Trevor Marshall. She was also predeceased by in-laws Art (Mary), Albert (Florence) Marshall, Anne (Tom) McAuliffe, Ivan Long, Stan Larson, Irene (George) McKay, Mal Robertson, Ken Cooney, Ron Roline and Dwayne Limpert. Maude is survived by sons Stan (Lorelee), Kingsley (Shirley) and Paul (Brenda) and daughter Alicia (Bob Hannah). Grandchildren Jodi, Kelly, Kim (Ian Johnson), Jayson, Julia (Dirk), Desmond (Tammy), Derek (Amanda), Michael Hannah (Hannah) and Sherry (Darren Meyer). Great-grandchildren Naviah and Kaden Johnson, Austin and Alec Biletsky, Madison, Michael, Ryder, Taytum and Mackenzey Marshall, Isabella and Abigail Hannah and Taylor and Shaelyn Meyer .Sisters  Abbie McNaughton and Phyllis MacDonald and sisters in-law Mary Long, Edith Larson, Kay Robertson, Lorraine Cooney, Josie Roline and Elsie Limpert. Also dozens of nieces and nephews. Mom was born near Handhill Lake on the family farm. She attended rural schools in the area and later ran the Dorm in Hanna. She married Michael Marshall November 24, 1943. They had three sons and a daughter, eleven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. They lived in Delia as newlyweds and later moved to the farm where they stayed for over fifty years. They moved back to Delia in a new home on their original lot. In 2006 they moved to the Sunshine Lodge in Drum where Dad passed in November 2007. Mom enjoyed her new home and many friends there. Mike and Maude are as recognized a duo as Ralph and Alice Kramden, Fred and Wilma Flinstone or George and Weezie Jefferson and nearly as comical. They were social butterflies and enjoyed visiting and entertaining.  In 1984 they were honored to receive Holy Communion from Pope John Paul II in Edmonton. They were very involved in the community and always willing to help out. Their home at the farm was a gathering point for family and friends. When they moved to town the tradition continued and seldom had a day pass that they did not have company. Mom with help from Aunt Mary ran the Coffee Shop while Luke went to China and developed a special friendship with Mai and Luke and their Family. Mom was the news correspondent to the local papers for years but was most in her element as the organizer for the many trips they enjoyed, I bet she’s looking for Lawrence Ludwig right now up yonder trying to get something lined up. We called Mom our Favorite Bad Example as she ate what she wanted when she wanted it, refused to take an extra step lest it could be viewed as exercise and still remained quite healthy. Funeral was held at 11:00 AM St Anthony’s Catholic Church in Drumheller on Friday, January 16 and Prayers were held the evening before at 7:00 P.M. The Family of Maude Marshall wishes to thank Father Ian Gagne for saying prayers and Mass for Mom. Also to Sean Grande from Courtney-Winters Funeral Home, the staff at Sunshine Lodge for their excellent care while Mom made her HOME there and all of her friends at Sunshine Lodge and to all family and friends who visited her. LEFFERSON, Claudia A.

January 9, 1936 - January 14, 2015

Claudia was born in Humboldt, Saskatchewan to James Alexander Turkington and Dorothy Alma Turkington.  She was the middle child with three older brothers, Cy, Tom, Jim, and three younger sisters, Nita, Mary, and Stella. Claudia grew up on the family farm at Daylesford, Saskatchewan and in Viscount, Saskatchewan. Claudia met Claude Lefferson at Cultus Lake, B.C.  They married in July 1955.  Daughter, Karen arrived on April 12, 1956 and son, Patrick on March 27, 1965. Nanie loved sports of all kinds, especially the Calgary Flames and the Calgary Stampeders.  She loved to visit, to take pictures, knit, crochet, scrapbook, listening to Irish Music, and play piano.  Mom enjoyed playing cards with her daughter-in-law, Candy, going on trips to B.C. with her son, Patrick and family and visiting with her friend Karl there.  Claudia also enjoyed a trip to Hawaii with her friend Karl, and a trip to Ireland with her daughter, Karen and granddaughter Elise.  Being with friends and family was always a highlight for Claudia. Claudia leaves behind, her two younger sisters, Mary Paul and Stella Britton, daughter, Karen (Murray) Martin, Elise, Heather and Jessica, son, Patrick (Candy) Lefferson, Jayden and Kayley, numerous nieces, and nephews. Claudia dearly loved all her girls and boys. Memorial service to take place at a later date.

HARPER, Dave

2015

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dave Harper. Dave suddenly passed away while at his winter residence in Yuma, Arizona, with Rose, his loving wife of sixty one years, at his side.  Dave will be deeply missed by all. Friends and family will cherish memories of Dave’s strong will and personality. At a young age, Dave joined his father in the tire industry. With a great business spirit, Dave was happy and proud to assist each and  every customer. Dave treated everyone he met through the  business like they were his friend and family member. In 1962 Dave became a founding member of the Western Canada Tire Dealers Association and worked very hard to make the tire industry what it is today. With a passion for his beliefs and a will to succeed, Dave was able to build a strong foundation for Harper’s Tire and those building blocks continue to make the business the success it is today. From a small, little shop in the downtown district of Drumheller to our current location, Dave was proud all the way. Dave believed in community volunteer work and was a proud and active member of Drumheller Lions Club for over fifty years. He enjoyed the times spent as a child at Little Fish Lake. These times continued as Dave became a father, grandfather and great grandfather. Working in his greenhouse tending to crops with scientific precision was another of Dave’s passions. Winter months found Dave and Rose spending time in Arizona with friends as part of the Winnebago RV group. Dave is survived by his wife, Rose, children Andrew (Brenda), Jan, Cheryl (Joe), grandchildren Michelle, Jordan (Melissa), Kyle, Taylor, and great grandchildren Dylan, Colby, Tate and Alison. Dave will be sadly missed by all his family. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation in Dave’s name may be made to the charity of your choice.

CONNELLY, Ronald Douglas

1947 - 2015

With great sorrow and regret we announce the passing of Ronald Douglas Connelly on Jan12/2015 at the age of 67, after a courageous battle with Cancer. Ronald was born in Drumheller and his travels took him throughout Alberta and BC, but he had always returned to his roots here in Drumheller.  Ron worked in the oil patch, the mills in BC, and locally at Riverside Packers and the Town of Drumheller.  Ron liked the outdoors and always looking to get out there and hunt or fish.  Ron was an easy guy to talk to and made many friends over the years.  Ron loved to have friends over and BBQ and maybe have an arm wrestle.  He is survived by his companion of the last 23 years Carol Sergeant.  His three sons from his marriage to Val Springer, Robert (Cheryl) Connelly, Craig (Missy) Connelly, and Keith Connelly.  Grandkids Cole Connelly, Tiffany Endersby-Connelly, Cherish Bennett-Connelly,  David Bennett-Connelly, Alyssa Bennett-Connelly.   His sisters Beth Hanson, Bonnie Tobler, and his brother Richard Connelly.  Nephews Barry Hanson, Brent Hanson, Dale Hanson, Kevin Tobler, Corey Tobler, Christopher Connelly and Michael Connelly.    We want to thank the Drumheller hospital for the great care they took of our father, brother, grandfather, and spouse.    We are waiting for spring to have a service so that we may all join him for a last BBQ, the details to be published here at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make memorial donations to Drumheller Health Complex (Cancer Clinic) 351 9 Street NW, Drumheller, AB T0J 0Y1. Family and friends mourn the passing of Lawrence Arthur Cooper (Coop).
LA Cooper, beloved husband of Irene Cooper of Drumheller passed away peacefully Friday, January 23, at the age of 84 years. Lawrence was born in Fort McLeod, AB on Feb. 23, 1930, to Gertrude and Thomas Cooper. Lawrence is survived by his wife Irene, his step-son Paul and Sheila De Costa, nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lawrence was predeceased by his parents, his brothers John and George Cooper, as well as his sister Bertha. Lawrence will be deeply missed by his family and his friends in the valley. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Courtney Winters Funeral Home. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at St. Magloire’s Anglican Church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, 2015. HANSEN, Shirley Mavern

March 5, 1931 - January 25, 2015

It is with great sadness, we announce the passing of Shirley Mavern Hansen of Drumheller, beloved wife of Glen Harold Hansen. Shirley passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness at Three Hills Health Centre Continuing Care on January 25, 2015 at the age of 83 years. Shirley was born March 5, 1931. As a young girl, Shirley worked at Eaton’s in Calgary where she met and married Glen. Shirley also worked at Wade’s Jewellery for several years. Shirley and Glen owned and operated Valley Esso Service Station where Shirley was the Bookkeeper for 20 years. Shirley had a great love of dogs. She also enjoyed many years of travelling in their motorhome. Her hobbies included crossword puzzles, reading and crafts. Besides her loving husband Glen, Shirley is survived by her two daughters Judy (Jordan) Mills and Sherry (Lorne) Newman, five grandchildren: Darrell, Lainey, Jamie (Ben), Terry (Sandra) and Logan, as well as three Great Grandchildren: Darcy, Maddison, Maya and one Great Great Grandchild Chiara. Shirley is predeceased by her daughter Lori Ann Hansen and brother Ron Spafford. Our beloved mother, grandma, great grandma and friend to all who knew her. She passed away at the Drumheller Hospital on January 22, 2015. Wayne Ian Beagrie was born December 11, 1940 in Swalwell, Alberta and passed away suddenly at his home in Drumheller on January 15, 2015. After graduating from the Three Hills High School he enrolled in Culinary program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology in Calgary.  When the Golden Hills Lodge opened in 1960 he came home to Three Hills and became the first cook at the Lodge.  To further his training, he moved to Barrie, Ontario in 1961 to apprentice and was part of the first graduating class of apprentice cooks at the Ontario Provincial Institute of Trades in Toronto.  He continued his career in the hospitality industry working as a chef, executive chef, and hotel manager in Calgary, Edmonton, Oakville, Lethbridge, Moose Jaw, Hanna and finally in Drumheller where he was the kitchen supervisor at the Correctional facility for many years. Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Karl and Grace Beagrie.  He will be sadly missed by his son James, brothers Doug, Darryl (Linda), and sister Ella Lammle (Allen), nephew Cam and Kyle Beagrie, nieces Stacie Trentham, Kathryn Plante, Tara Lammle, their families, and numerous cousins.

Vladimir Krb, loving husband and father, peacefully passed away on Sunday, January 25th, 2015 at the age of 71. A classically trained artist under Zdenek Burian of Czechoslovakia, Vladimir’s natural talent enabled him to capture the vitality of life on canvas. His eclectic spirit and passion for art, life and family inspired everyone around him to be their best. After emigrating from Czechoslovakia in 1982, he embodied the national spirit, contributing generously to Canadian arts and culture, most notably through his artistic legacy at the world-renowned Royal Tyrrell Museum.  He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his wife of 41 years, Bozena, and his two sons Vojtech and Stepan. The family would like to thank the Drumheller Health Centre for the thoughtful care given to Vladimir, and give special thanks to our friends Doreen Oliver, Cindy Stelmaschuk and Kathy Vickers. A celebration of Vladimir’s life will be held in the summer with friends and family.

Jane Smith unexpectedly passed away on January 31, 2015. She is survived by her husband Michael and sons Connor and Derek; her parents Robert and Sharen Bennewies of Calgary; her sister Jill James (Michael) of Brisbane, Australia; sisters-in-law Laurie (Michael) Remigi of Calgary, Michelle (Gerald) Whipf of Calgary, Lesley (Steven) Boyko of Drumheller; father and mother-in-law Gordon and Margie Smith of Drumheller; nieces and nephews Elliott and Adam James, Taylor and Brett Remigi, Karsten and Chase Smith, Bailey, Allison, Cari and Tyler Boyko; uncles and aunts Doug (Sheila) Benneweis, Don (Rita) Benneweis, Lyle (Colleen Sampson, Dennis Sampson, Ken (Colleen) Sampson, Sharon Sampson; cousins Russell (Alison) Benneweis, Greg (Lisa) Benneweis, Aaron (Deidre) Benneweis, Terra (Chris) MacEwan, Trina Sampson, Tim (Linda) Sampson, Tiffany Sampson, Eric (Marian) Sampson. Jane was born on July 2, 1969 in Ottawa, Ontario. She took her elementary education in Kars, Ontario and Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. She completed her education degree at the University of Saskatchewan in 1992 and her Masters of Education at the University of Calgary in 2012. She taught at Greentree Elementary School for the past 22 years. A celebration of Jane’s life will be held Friday, February 6 at 2:00 p.m. at the Badlands Community Facility. Private family interment to follow in the Drumheller Cemetery. A time of fellowship will be held immediately following the celebration of life service at the facility. Courtney-Winters have been entrusted  with the arrangements.     

PEDERSEN, Elly

Elly passed away peacefully at her home in Carbon at the age  of 91. She is survived by her children Eva, Jan, Alice, and Danny, 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Walther in 1982. There will be no service at her request.
